I recently had the pleasure of providing Japanese narration for an exciting collaboration between a global brand and a Japanese corporation.
Due to the time difference, we kicked off the session in the middle of the night here in Japan. Interestingly, late-night recording has a hidden perk for narrators: the world is silent, allowing my microphone to capture the purest, most pristine audio possible.
The project was conducted via a Live Directed Session from my private soundproof studio, connecting with the creative team in real-time.
The Request: Slated Phrases vs. Flow
The overseas production team initially requested that I record each phrase individually with a “slate” (numbering) for easy editing. While this is a common and practical request for editors who don’t speak Japanese, I offered an additional suggestion:
Recording a full-length take while syncing live to the picture.
Why “Sync-to-Picture” Matters
Recording individual phrases without the visual context can be risky. Without the flow of the video, the timing can often end up too long or too short for the actual edit. More importantly, the emotional arc of the narration can feel fragmented.
By monitoring the reference video and aligning my delivery with the timing of the temporary narration, the voice gains “warmth” and “texture.” It allows the Japanese message to breathe naturally with the visuals, ensuring the timing is frame-accurate and the emotion resonates with the audience.
The Result: Seamless Localization
After providing both versions, the Japanese team on the call was thrilled with the synced take. They noted how much more impactful and natural the delivery felt compared to the isolated phrases. Ultimately, they chose the “Sync-to-Picture” version for the final cut.
Providing a professional service is about more than just reading lines; it’s about understanding the final vision and suggesting the best workflow to achieve it.

A Multilingual Session
The session was a dynamic mix of English and Japanese. While the main direction was in English, being able to clarify subtle nuances in Japanese directly with the local team ensured a high level of precision. It was a truly rewarding experience to bridge these two worlds through my voice.
